POSTOPERATIVE ACL INSTRUCTIONS

Please read the routine postoperative instructions as well.

You will be given 3 things postop.

(1) We will use a brace which needs to be on any time that you are up. Typically I allow full weight bearing as tolerated right away on the crutches ( unless I tell you otherwise). You don't have to sleep in the brace or have on when the motion machine is on.

(2) You will be given a continuous passive motion (CPM) machine for use the first week. This should be used 6 hours per day which can be split up as desired. Motion can be advanced as tolerated, but should be at least 90 degrees by the end of the first week. Remember that complete extension is the most important thing to get back that first week.

(3) A cold therapy machine will also be given to you if covered by your insurance. Use it liberally. It helps tremendously to decrease postop pain and swelling. If not covered, don't worry. Ice packs work fine. My personal favorite is still a bag of frozen peas. I'll typically see you back in the office at 7 - 10 days, 3 weeks, 6 weeks, 3 months and 6 months. I have certain goals I like to see met at each visit and will add things for you to do each time.
